Just a quick update to my last blog. That ‘trunking to Scotland’ agency job was a bust. It was the old school agency fishing ploy. “That job has been filled, but here’s an entirely different one we need doing.” No.
I went back to the firm who were doing the Home Bargains contract, GBA logistics, and applied with them. I’ve looked, and they had an advert for this job last month, saying £40.5 -£42k a year for 4 on 4 off. Even if it’s 12 hours that’s £18.77 per hour (for £41k). They got straight back to me and arranged an assessment for Tuesday. I asked him what he meant by ‘days’, he said 05.00 onwards! That will do, Donkey! The reason I didn’t take the job last time was because they wanted 00.00 -04.00 starts. If they are still offering the same pay as the advert I saw (not the £16.20 the other agency were stating) I’ll take it. That would be great. On my doorstep, easier driving, 4 on 4 off, regular wages. What’s not to love?
I finally got around to working on the Harley today. I’ve put it off for so long it had grown into monster proportions in my mind. It took me about 2 hours to mix and match the parts from my rear light and the one I’d ordered as a second hand replacement (which didn’t fit. Liars!). It was really simple. I now have a back light and brake light.
I left it late to start as I was waiting on the postman (and putting it off) so I had to stop to cook tea when Wendy got home, but tomorrow I can tidy away the wiring under the mudguard, secure the indicators, then refit the back wheel. Then the Sporty should be good to go.
I would like to strip my good carbs for the VFR and ultrasonic clean them, but I’ve not got the seal set yet so couldn’t rebuild them. More chance of things getting lost or me forgetting what goes where. I am looking forward to playing with my new kit though.
A final (who am I kidding?) purchase for the VFR today, a stock (quietest) silencer and a new exhaust gasket. Fit that, clean and refurb the carbs, set them back to factory standard, fit them, and all should be brilliant.
If I get this job around the corner I could use either bike (depending on start time, the neighbours would not be thrilled if I left the Sporty to warm up at 04.30) or pushbike.
And finally, I’m excited and enthusiastic again! I must be full on sane again. Well, my version of it. Yay!
… Next day: OK, I was insane, so that didn’t help, but that job on the Harley, the aversion I felt to it, the prevarication and avoidance… it took me less than 2 hours to rig up the light yesterday, about an hour to tidy the wiring, secure the indicators and fit the back wheel today. I had to charge the battery again, which took a long time, but about 3 hours of work and the bike is back together again and running. It’s one of those things, while you are avoiding it it is massive, but when you break it down into one job at a time it is really, really easy. I think it’s a testament to how much better I am now. I must have been pretty barking. And once I started getting sane the residual insanity dread must have lingered. I’m happy that the Harley is up and running and very happy that it’s an indicator of how sane I now am. I’ll try a test ride tomorrow.
